O'Neil, who was still in high school year at the time of the auditions, tried out for Canadian Idol's 3rd season in the beginning of 2005. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants after the judges praised her vocal ability. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. But she lost badly in both the Top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. They were stunned by the outcome and urged the audience to support singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. O'Neil was always delivering top performance since then, never finished lower than the three top performers. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the time of the show. O'Neil received a phone call right away from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
